TIS is very keen to encourage people to shop and spend time locally. In our January 2022 newsletter, we included a special focus on local businesses in the St John’s Road area.
TIS currently has some 300 individual and corporate members. These all receive a hard copy newsletter 4 times per year plus a regular shorter digi-news at least 6 times per year. They also have access to our TIS website (www.isleworthsociety.org) which last year had over 11,000 visitors.
As well as our own activities TIS actively promotes the work of other valuable local organisations, such as Hounslow Heritage Walks, Friends of Isleworth Public Hall and Shrewsbury Walk Traders’ Market.
- TIS aims to protect and preserve Isleworth's built environment and special character. For example in 2022 we won a grant from the Council to restore Isleworth War Memorial in time for its 100th anniversary, and produced a special commemorative booklet. This year, we were involved in a project to restore the pedestrian gate and pillars of Park Road Cemetery and made a successful application to make the Town Wharf pub, an Asset of Community Value.
- Each year, together with local churches, schools and the Royal British Legion (Isleworth Branch), we support an annual Remembrance Sunday procession and ceremony.
- We organise regular talks to promote and highlight Isleworth's history and heritage. For example recently we have held very well attended community talks on the 'Pubs of Isleworth', 'The Marble Hill Project', 'Panorama of the Thames' and on ‘History of West Middlesex Hospital`.
- We also organise regular events to bring the community together across Isleworth, such as the Community Quiz nights in December .
- Last year for the first time we organised an `Our Isleworth Community Photography Competition`, together with local schools. This had categories for children under 11, teenagers and adults. We secured prizes for the competition from a wide range of local businesses. The event culminated in a really successful public exhibition of shortlisted photos, a very well attended evening awards ceremony and a community film of the event. The feedback we received was so positive we are running a further community photo competition in Autumn 2023.
- We planned a major event on March 16th around the theme of Protecting Isleworth's Environment. This brought together local people, local Councillors and others to discuss practical steps we can all take to both protect our local environment and tackle climate change. We followed this up in October via a `community clean up` of a specific area in Isleworth.
- We have recently been awarded a grant from the Council to organise a community activity around the coronation of King Charles 111 and Queen Camilla, involving a tree planting in Shrewsbury Walk, Isleworth.
Local businesses have sponsored events and activities. Some have sponsored the printed newsletter and provided an advertisement for their company. The Isleworth Society in exchange has enabled their employees to access our events and activities
